Swimmer Jane Kavanagh commits to Notre Dame for fall 2027

Jane Kavanagh, a swimmer from Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA, has chosen the University of Notre Dame as her next destination. She will join the Fighting Irish women’s swimming team in fall 2027 as part of the class of 2031. Kavanagh announced her commitment after a standout season at YMCA Short Course Nationals. She finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.86, fourth in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.36, fourth in the 200-yard IM in 2:02.89 and tenth in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.44. In her announcement, she thanked her coaches, friends and family, and ended with "Go Irish." The 1:48.86 time stands out at the YMCA level, but the picture becomes more cautious when compared with ACC standards. At Summer Juniors, Kavanagh ranked 102nd in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:25.64 and 130th in the 100-meter freestyle in 59.30. She has not yet reached the front pack at the USA Swimming junior national level. Notre Dame’s women’s swimming team finished 11th out of 15 teams at the 2026 ACC Championships with 366 points. This is not a top-tier conference program, but it offers room for an athlete still developing. Kavanagh will join incoming swimmers Eleanor Geraghty, Meghan Bluethmann, Maris Williams and Sarah Paisley Owen. This suggests the staff is building roster depth rather than expecting an immediate scorer. Numbers only tell part of the story; tactics begin with errors. The hidden trap here is reading YMCA results as an absolute measure. Scoring at a Power Five conference meet is a different level from winning at a YMCA meet. To score at ACC level, Kavanagh needs to approach the 1:46.16 mark that Becky Rentz produced while finishing 19th in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2026 ACC Championships. The gap between 1:48.86 and 1:46.16 is 2.70 seconds. A 2.70-second gap is not a chasm, but it is not small either. It requires improvement in turns, underwater work and back-half endurance. Without split data, it is impossible to know exactly where Kavanagh loses time. What can be said is that she needs a system-level jump, not just a one percent improvement. The major blind spot is the difference between two competition systems. YMCA Short Course Nationals has real depth, but USA Swimming’s Summer Juniors is larger and tougher. Finishing second at YMCA while placing 102nd and 130th at Summer Juniors suggests success in a 25-yard pool does not automatically translate into national-class standing. Committing more than two years before enrollment is also a quiet bet. If Kavanagh keeps developing, Notre Dame gains a versatile swimmer. If she plateaus or the coaching staff changes, both sides will need to adjust. Notre Dame is not an ACC powerhouse, but that also gives Kavanagh room to grow without immediate scoring pressure. The two years before college are when an athlete’s real structure becomes visible. Kavanagh will be measured through markers: 1:48, then 1:47, then 1:46. If she is still stuck at 1:48.86 in 2027, the story will be different. If she reaches 1:46, Notre Dame will have not just another freshman, but a potential scorer. Can Kavanagh turn the 2.70-second gap into an advantage before stepping onto campus? The numbers will answer, but the answer will only appear in her upcoming races, not in today’s commitment.
